Field Poppy (Papaver rhoeas)
A delicate wildflower with silky red petals — iconic in meadows, pollinator-friendly gardens, and naturalistic plantings

🌺 Field Poppy is one of Britain’s most recognisable wildflowers, celebrated for its vivid scarlet petals, inky dark centre, and light, fluttering movement. Once abundant in cornfields and disturbed farmland, it is now most often seen in wildflower meadows, roadside verges, and relaxed, naturalistic gardens.

Its petals are tissue-thin and slightly crinkled, catching the light and moving effortlessly in the breeze. Each flower lasts only a day or two, but the plant produces a continuous succession of blooms from late spring into summer, ensuring a long-lasting display.

The open flowers are rich in pollen, making them especially valuable to bees. After flowering, distinctive rounded seed heads form, adding subtle architectural interest and feeding birds if left in place.

A timeless, low-maintenance wildflower that brings softness, movement, and ecological richness to any sunny space.
