Egyptian Walking onion
Egyptian Walking Onion (Allium × proliferum / Allium cepa var. viviparum)
A hardy perennial onion known for its unique “walking” growth habit, edible topsets, and year‑round productivity
🌿 The Egyptian walking onion is a distinctive perennial onion originating from Siberia and well adapted to the UK climate. Unlike standard onions, it produces clusters of small bulbils (topsets) at the top of its stems. As these become heavy, the stems bend to the ground and the bulbils root — allowing the plant to “walk” slowly across the garden. This unusual habit, combined with its hardiness and multiple edible parts, makes it a fascinating and highly productive addition to herb and vegetable gardens.
Egyptian walking onions offer exceptional versatility, with several edible parts throughout the year.
